What is a Sentence?

When words are arranged to express a feeling meaningfully and get a pause for a while at the end, they make a sentence.

There is no limitation of using words in a sentence.One can use as many as words in a sentence.

Characteristic of a Sentence

  1. A sentence requires at least one subject with one verb or one verb with one object.

Example:

a. I go. b. Drink water.

2. Without verb there is no sentence.

3.A sentence may start with Subject or Verb.

Example:

a.I read a book.

b.Read the book .

4. A sentence may not have Subject.

Example: Do the work

5. A sentence may not have a Object.

Example: I play.

How many kinds of Sentences?

According to impression and meaning we find five kinds of sentences in English Language.They are:

  • Assertive Sentence.
  • Interrogative Sentence.
  • Imperative Sentence.
  • Optative Sentence.
  • Exclamatory Sentence.

Assertive Sentence.

Assertive Sentence is a statement in which we don’t find any query, order, request, command, advice, proposal, blessing,prayer or exclamation .

Example:1.I’m a student. 2. I go to school everyday.3.You are in class five.

Interrogative Sentence

Interrogative Sentence is a question by which we ask someone anything or any information.A question-mark(?) is used at the end of an Interrogative Sentence.

Example: What’s your name?

2.How are you?

3 What class do you read in?

Imperative Sentence

An Imperative Sentence is an order or command or request or advice or prohibition or a proposal.

Example:

  1. Order: Open the door.
  2. Command: March on.
  3. Request: Give me a glass of water, please.
  4. Advice: Get up early in the morning.
  5. Prohibition: Don’t run in the sun.
  6. Proposal: Let’s play football.

Optative Sentence:

An Optative Sentence is a wish or blessing or prayer.

Wish , blessing and prayer are same.

Example:

  1. Long live our President.
  2. May Allah help you.
  3. May you prosper in life.

Exclamatory Sentence

An Exclamatory Sentence is a sudden expression of sadness and happiness. It may be sorrow,joy,laugh,cry or any sentiment or sensation.

Example:

  1. What a beautiful bird it is!
  2. How charming the scenery is!
  3. What a pity !

Affirmative Sentence

If any sentence has positive impression, it will be an Affirmative Sentence. There is no ‘No’ or ‘Not’ or ‘Don’t’ or’ Doesn’t’ or’ Didn’t or ,’n’t’ etc with any affirmative sentence.

Example: 1. I go to school 2. They play football.

Negative Sentence

If any sentence has negative impression,it will be a Negative Sentence. There is ‘No’ or ‘Not’ with a negative sentence.

Example: 1. I don’t go to school.2. They don’t play football.3.I have no money.

Subject, verb,object

Subject:

Subject is a living being/beings or a lifeless material /materials that causes or occurs anything.

I eat rice

Here I is a subject .

Subject may be singular or plural.

Verb:

A verb is an action done or caused or occurred by Subject.

They play football.

Here ‘play’ is a verb.

Verb may be singular or plural .

Object:

An object is a living being / beings or a material /materials which a subject accomplish or do or feel or like or choose or sing or play .

I play football.

Here ‘football ‘ is a object .

Object may be singular or plural.

How to identify Subject, Verb and Object?

By asking question with Who , we can easily find the subject. Suppose, the sentence is: I play football. Now the question is : Who is playing ? The answer will be I. This I is subject.

If the question is – ‘What do I /you (subject) do?’, the answer will be ‘play’. This play is verb.

If the question is -‘ What do you/ I play?’, the answer will be ‘football’ This football is object.
